Graffiti: The Art Of Streets

If you wander around in the city of Athens, one thing you will sure notice are the numerous grafitties that most of the times decorate and beautify the city.

Graffiti artists lost inside the rythm of the streets do their works either under the day light or in the silence of the night. Their works are inspired from social, economical, political or personal issues, that are captivated from their paints and bare hands.

You can find these paintings in every street and every neighbourhood. Sometimes one piece at the time or some others, entire galleries can pop-up out of nowhere in a couple of hours.

But let’s point out something, graffiti is not something new. Actually it is as old as the human culture. In ancient times graffiti was carved into buildings, in fact the word comes from the Greek word graphi, which means to write.

Throughout the years, graffiti has been used for many purposes besides art. It has been used as an act of revolution and resistance during times of war and generally hard times, when people felt the need to speak out and make a statement. It has also been used from sport clubs, as an act of support towards to a team or an idea. Bust most of the times these kinds of graffiti contain mostly tagging and less painting, so I think we should not infuse and confuse these two, since they are two completely different things.

Graffiti is a kind of art, when is used in order to beautify something and make it unique.
